Matt shows us some Pure Rocky Mountain Spring Water This is the first in a series of articles introducing you to our Board of Directors. We begin with our Board President, Matt Cook.
Matt is currently Energy Manager for Coors Brewing Company in Golden. Prior to this temporary assignment, he served as the Manager of Water Resources Operations and as Field Operations Manager for Coors’ two subsidiary carrier ditch companies—the Rocky Mountain Water Company and the Wannamaker Ditch Company. He holds a BSc in Engineering Science, MS in Civil Engineering (Water Resources Planning and Management), and MBA degrees from Colorado State University. Matt is a registered professional engineer in Colorado. Prior to joining Coors, Matt worked as a consulting engineer on a broad array of projects involving the environmental permitting of water storage projects, water resources planning and management, water rights, and water quality management. He serves as the Industry representative on the Colorado Foundation for Water Education Board of Trustees. In his spare time (not that he really has any) he proudly serves as an Engineering Duty Officer in the U.S. Naval Reserves. Matt served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1992 as a submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator.
DARCA: What was your first job?
Matt: I began working at Hillcrest Golf course in Durango at age 13, parking golf carts, retrieving range balls using a machine bolted to a 1940 Ford tractor, cleaning golf clubs, and (the best part of the job) cleaning the locker rooms/restrooms!
DARCA: How did you get started in water?
Matt: I probably got started in water during my junior year as an undergraduate at Colorado State University. My advisor, Robert Ward -former Director of the Colorado Water Resources Research Institute, suggested that I take some water-related electives. He also put me in touch with a water resources engineering consultant in Loveland for my senior design project. It all worked out well, since the consultant later offered me a full-time job as a water resource engineer after I graduated!

DARCA: Tell us about your family.
Matt: My wife
Jennifer and I have been married for 12 years. We have three
children: Hannah (9), Jordyn (7) and Hunter (6). Our Saint Bernard,
Abby, could probably be considered a fourth "child". DARCA: Why do you believe in DARCA?
Matt:
As a water resource engineer by training, I have been involved in
several professional organizations that serve as an information and
networking resource for water resource professionals -- American Water
Resources Association, the American Society of Civil Engineers,
Colorado Water Congress. The information and networking needs of ditch
and reservoir companies, lateral companies, and irrigation districts
are quite unique and warrant a separate organization whose sole mission
is to serve their needs. Although still relatively young, I believe
that DARCA is fulfilling its mission to become the definitive resource
for networking, information, and advocacy among our members. As the
saying goes, there is strength in numbers! We need to continue to grow
DARCA's membership to include all of Colorado's ditch and reservoir
companies, laterals, private ditches, and irrigation districts. DARCA: What was your first car?
Matt: A 1977 blaze orange Chevy Chevette. I told everyone that I drove a "Vette", although not exactly a Cor-"Vette"!
DARCA: What are your non water-related interests?
Matt: My family, and when time permits, hunting, flyfishing, golf, horseback riding, etc. |
