Water news on our headlines page was a bit slow through the holidays, but we're making up for lost time now. With the legislature back in session and some high-profile legal battles underway, there's a lot of news to keep up with.
This week the theme seems to be owners of senior water rights fighting against the juniors. Among the battles:
- Surface water users in the San Luis Valley are complaining that the Rio Grand Water Conservation District spends too much time worrying about junior groundwater users.
- In Denver, a hearing before the groundwater commission pits senior surface water users against a bunch of well owners who think their long, skinny aquifer ought not be administered along with the rest of the South Platte alluvial aquifer
- And again in northeast Colorado, well owners are pushing legislation to give the State Engineer the authority to modify the filling of senior reservoir storage rights, over the objections of many reservoir owners.
Stay tuned - never a dull moment!
