Controversy on the Arkansas PDF Print E-mail

Image  In Western Colorado, residents are divided by a proposed project on the Arkansas. This isn't an aurgument over water rights or diversions. This is about art. The artist Christo proposes to cover 42 miles of the Arkansas River with metallic fabric. The artist has been working for 18 years to get the permits to pursue this piece.
Supporters in the area see this project as a great economic venture for people along the river. They project the piece will bring in 313 temporary jobs and about $121 million in tourism.
However, opponnents see the project as dangerous and harmful to the environment along the riverbed. Residents of towns with only small 2-way highways see the tourism as a nuisance on the roads. Environmentalists see the irreversable harm that could result from the covering the river.
